Jogger Mugged in Central Park Thursday Night

March 21, 2008 -- Thursday night Two vicious muggers stabbed and slashed a 23-year-old man in Central Park last night after grabbing his wallet and iPod, police sources said. The attack occurred at about 8:40 p.m. when the duo accosted the victim at 102nd Street and Park Road near Central Park West, the sources said. After the thugs, wearing dark hooded sweatshirts, stole the man's wallet and iPod, one of them stabbed him once in the upper leg and slashed him on the arm, the sources said. It was unclear if the victim had resisted. The attackers fled. The victim, who was not immediately identified, was taken to St Luke's Hospital, where he was in stable condition. Dozens of cops fanned out to find the punks. Drew Keller, 28, who was walking his pit bull and Schnauzer dogs in the park, was surprised at the violence. "Wow, that's crazy," he said. "I'm here at all hours, even at 3 a.m. "I would never expect this would happen in this area." [END] I am an anti-impaired (no ipod) advocate - and run in the park all the time at very late hours - have never had a problem - but I would think a mugger would think twice about taking me on - runners - be aware out there in the late evening hours.

That whole story is bogus. He now has regrets of joining the military and needed a way out.

is that true? (above)

Whatever, if the attack is true, that really sucks.

If you believe the media/press, it's true. Getting past the unfortunate aspect of the event in and of itself, there are some in media that are paralleling & linking this (coupling the event) to the "Central Park Jogger" tragedy.

Life in NYC. If something happens in Central Park, it's worldwide news and this event on Thursday night is worldwide news, believe it or not. I read a lot about runners and joggers and I know basic trails all over this country where joggers have been victimized in numerous ways, repeatedly - there's minimal uproar.

How does our world work? (and I can document this). Joggers can be assaulted on a trail or in a park in California or Virginia, or [fill in the blank] - it can happen 2 or 3 times in the course of a year, it never makes news beyond a local radio airwave or tv news broadcast.

It happens once, 1 time, in Central Park - NYC and it will be reported as far as Japan and coupled with an incident that tragically happened a decade ago. Here this incident is now in media coupled with the "Central Park Jogger" tragedy. The logical extension is that Central Park can be free of assaults for the next decade and then invariably when something tragic happens, these past incidents will be conjured up, etc, linked - etc. Part of the downside of being an incredible place worth worldwide attention. The news business is about driving stories that gain eyeballs/attention...first and foremost.
