The Fred Lebow Movie: Run For Your Life - The Creation of the New York City Marathon

videoHere in New York City we have the Tribeca Film Festival - and there is a movie premiering there about the legendary "Fred Lebow" called Run For Your Life, directed by Judd Erlich. It's a fun, loving, and inspirational tribute to the late Fred Lebow and shows how his imagination, determination, and love for running created one of the world's most popular sporting events, The New York City Marathon. Not to diminish the story of Fred Lebow at all.....but I've been told from a couple of people who were there at the time - not the best of stories about Fred Lebow (may I politely say) in terms of his relations with Ted Corbitt. I'm told once he was diagnosed and aware he had cancer, a kinder Fred Lebow emerged - a new leaf turned over...in his relations with Ted Corbitt and few others.

Thanks for letting you readers know about the movie. It explores Fred's roots, how he came to be the (often abrasive) character that he was, and how he changed throughout his life. Also, I thought you might like to know that the film includes the last known interview with Ted Corbitt before his recent passing.

Best,

I saw this excellent film on Saturday. I first ran the NYC Marathon back in 1980. I saw Fred in action and said to myself, "when I grow up I want to start one of these back at home". In 2002 I founded and now direct the Mount Desert Island Marathon. I'd like to thank Fred Lebow for giving me the courage and inspiration to start a marathon. Incidently I ran in the 2007 NYC Marathon which I hoped would be my 50th sub 3 hour marathon to celebrate my 50th birthday. I met my goal and have to believe I had a little help. Thanks Fred! Finally as a quiet tribute from one race director to another each year I bring a medal to Fred's statue which over looks the NYC Marathon finsh line from the event he had a big part in helping to create.

Thanks again

PS My assistant and I left Maine (Bar Harbor) at 2am on Sat morning and drove down and back just to see this movie, 1000 miles total. It was well worth it and I even got a run in, in Cental Park! We got home at 3am on Sunday morning.
