David Goggins : Ultrarunner - Revisited & Respected

videoLast week I lampooned the guy in the video above, David Goggins who earned 5th place in the '06 Badwater 135 mile ultra race, and gave him some pretty hard shots.....(you all have to know this was on par with talking junk on the basketball court if you will) - he got it.....we're cool - and he's a great sport. I appreciate him checking-in & and contributing his voice to Harlem 26.2 - he did not have to do that. It's of great value to me to share with my readers that men like him are out there - countering the prevailing notion that Black Americans don't do distance. Very few people are familiar with the world of ultrarunning and I am proud to know a Black man is out there doing it on a level another Black man, Ted Corbitt (founder of the sport) would admire. I challenged David because I hold him to higher standard in this running game we all do. He's good - but could be great (on the Ultra circuit) - and he strikes me as a person who answers and rises to a fairground challenge. However distance running is not fair- no one cares about your BMI - David Goggins is not a little guy. Keep in mind when a guy like David runs an ultra like Badwater - in the desert sun - the toll he takes - due to his body mass alone- absorbing heat / carrying mass - 6'1" 195 .lb and muscle. It's much harder for this guy than the rest of the field - to handle the elevation gains, etc. - however this guy doesn't complain - he's a "no excuse" guy - he just deals with it and presses on - forward. Enjoy the video - and get a feel for the man he is. If he had a fan site or a place where you can keep up with him - I would post it - if you know of one - please post it. Is this guy really so humble that unlike Jurek and Ferg Hawke and Karno and Pam Reed....he does not have his own fan website? Can that really be?.....no myspace or facebook or anything? How do you keep up with him then? Check out this podcast interview David did last Summer too - very impressive man and I am happy I can expose him to a new audience. Have a great day.

Thanks for the kind words. You remind me of a lot of my family members. We would go back and forth talking crap for days. I look foward to running with you one day. Good luck this year with your races. I hope all the people who read the blog took it as two guys just talking crap. Like Lance said, It was just like talking junk on the basketball court.

"It was like talking junk on the basketball court" just before one guy swatted the other guy's weak-assed shot three courts over.

Now if only Tony Reed would bring some game...

Lance,

Thanks for sorting out your misconception, in the future please take the time to meet someone before lampooning them. I had the privilege of meeting David when we shared the course of the San Diego One Day and now have the honor of calling him a friend. Both he and his wife are very special people and because of his volunteer service to our country, our families are safe and we can sleep at night.

How could you leverage your exposure to raise funds for a great cause like American Military Families or the Special Operations Warrior Foundation?

In gratitude,

Keith Kirby

Good question. I can assure and promise you - through my blog several thousand people now know who David Goggins is. I've exposed him to new fans - and they should be fans. I wish he had a central gathering point on-line that I could point people to - to keep up with him and his efforts. Blogs & commentary is about "whipping it up" often - raising eyebrows, provoking thought, etc. I willingly played the role of "antagonist" - to his "protagonist" - it's "infotainment" for the masses. David Goggins and his causes is more well known (and admired) now, after I lampooned him, than he was before. What's not to admire about the guy? I knew that before the fact.

He really should have a central gathering point on-line somewhere. I am ending this blog very soon, after a full and solid year - however it will remain on line - people will still comment, it will function within google, etc... if and when he creates a central gathering point on line - he or you can come on here an announce the url / domain and links - and direct those fans to your/his causes. All the best.

Awesome.

I just found out about this guy Goggins on facebook--so my status now reads:
Silica Larkin
is reading an ad on facebook: learn what pushes ultra marathon runner David Goggins...judging from the picture, I'd say all the women grabbing at his shorts.

High five to you, Aleeza.

At 5' 4" and #124, I was pretty beefy for a division I XC runner and an Ironman age-group medalist. Diversity is a beautiful thing.

Nice to have found your blog.

Glad to see this Lance, way to be humble. And to David Goggins, as a fellow Service Member I just want to say that I respect everything you do and I truly am inspired by you. Keep up the outstanding work.
