Coming Soon...Olympians Running in Central Park

Wow - I see the New York Road Runners just signed up that woman on the left, Shalane Flanagan to show up here in NYC on March 15 and race in the USA 8K Championships - Women's Group. She's the fastest woman middle distance runner in the U.S., an olympian - world class runner....I would rank her 10th or so worldwide @ 5K for example. How does she train? 3 week cycles of 60, 70, and then close to 80 miles a week. In addition she works on her speed every day with strides after almost every run. In November she clocked a 26:29 @ 8K, I think the distance is a little further than her strong suit - but she gotta be the favorite to bank the $10,000 first prize. However my favorite is Jen Rhines that woman on the right above - why? She has an "all around game", does it all - and you rarely see that - I admire that - a runner that does it all, 1,500m to the Marathon.....her times? 1,500m - 4:17.30; 3,000m - 8:46.09; 5K – 14:55.18 ; 10,000m - 31:17.31 ; marathon – 2:29:32 . This is going to be a show not to miss - if you've never seen Olympians running - be at Central Park on March 15, visit the NYRR site for details. The coolest thing about training in Central Park is I am sure 1, 2, and perhaps even 3 days before this race - on the men's side you will see Alan Webb & Ritz, along with these women -training along right beside you - as you run in Central Park. I am fortunate - and spoiled, we all are - those of us that on a daily basis get to run in Central Park.

I'd love to see these races. I think Flanagan will beat Rhines, but I think Rhines will give her a much better race than her competitors at US XC Nationals.

As for Dathan Ritzenhein and Alan Webb, I'm really hesitant to make a call on that one. I'd normally think Ritz should win, but Webb has shown he can run at those distances. Heck, it'll probably be Abdi anyway.

Enjoy the race. I wish I could be there.

Hey thanks for commenting. Do note Ritz holds the course record for Central Park with the Harlem hills in the course, the full 10K.
This course will not have the hills - I think it favors Ritz - just being in Central Park & I've never seen (with my own eyes) Webb excell in road racing - he's awesome on tracks - actually I did see him do a straight race down 5th Ave in the Continental Mile. Abdi? Every time I've seen him race in Central Park he's chocked. On paper he shoudl win every time. I saw him last choke at the US Olympic Trials in the park, before that? He chocked against Fam in this very race a year ago. "Choked" is harsh - but on paper he's always had the clear advantage - been the clear favorite. I believe he lives and trains in Arizona - and that's the problem. I don't believe his training, practices, and overall environment suits him well or transfers well for NYC & Central Park racing. But we'll see.

FYI, the women's race was NOT a USA Championship it was an invitational. Only the men's race was a USA Championship.
